General Dynamics Building Among First in U.S. to Achieve 'Green Building' Status for Energy Efficiency, Environmental Design
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - General Dynamics C4 Systems has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - Existing Building (LEED-EB) certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) for its 650,000 square foot manufacturing and office building in Scottsdale, the first industrial building of its size in the United States to meet the organization's national standards for developing high performance, sustainable buildings. The LEED program was created to establish a common standard of environmental measurement, promote integrated whole-building design practices, and recognize environmental leadership in the building industry.
"In our water reclamation and consumption efforts alone the LEED-EB program has made a tremendous impact on our overall conservation and energy program," said George Adams, Facilities Manager for General Dynamics C4 Systems in Scottsdale. "Working within the guidelines set by the USGBC is not only the right thing to do for our environment, it also boosts our partnership with the City of Scottsdale and its conservation efforts."
General Dynamics received the certification for its building at 8220 E. Roosevelt St. in Scottsdale and expects to achieve certification on its second Scottsdale building shortly. The LEED rating system for existing buildings addresses building operations and upgrades in areas such as: whole-building cleaning and maintenance issues including chemical use; ongoing indoor air quality; energy efficiency; water efficiency; recycling programs; and exterior maintenance programs. LEED-EB certification is a voluntary program that requires participants to identify and implement operational improvements and equipment necessary to obtain certification, prepare documentation regarding building performance data and operational procedures and submit an application for review by the USGBC.
"The General Dynamics LEED-EB certification has set a high standard for the green building industry in Arizona," said Charlie Popeck, USGBC Arizona Chapter President...
